The abundance of brown dwarfs

چکیده

The amount of mass contained in low-mass objects is investigated anew. Instead of using a mass–luminosity relation to convert a luminosity function to a mass function, I predict the mass-luminosity relation from assumed mass functions and the luminosity functions of Jahreiss &Wielen (1997) and Gould, Bahcall & Flynn (1997). Comparison of the resulting mass–luminosity relations with data for binary stars constrains the permissible mass functions. If the mass function is assumed to be a power law, the best fitting slope lies either side of the critical slope, α = −2, below which the mass in low-mass objects is divergent, depending on the luminosity function adopted. If these power-law mass functions are truncated at 0.001M⊙, the contribution to the local density from stars lies between 0.016 and 0.039M⊙ pc , in conformity with the mass density that has been inferred dynamically from stars in the Hipparcos Catalogue. If the mass function is generalized from a power law to a low-order polynomial in log(M), the mass in stars with M < 0.1M⊙ is either negligible or strongly divergent, depending on the order of the polynomial adopted.

The Brown Dwarf - Exoplanet Connection

Brown dwarfs are commonly regarded as easily-observed templates for exoplanet studies, with comparable masses, physical sizes and atmospheric properties. There is indeed considerable overlap in the photospheric temperatures of the coldest brown dwarfs (spectral classes L and T) and the hottest exoplanets. However, the properties and processes associated with brown dwarf and exoplanet atmosphere...

Atmospheric Chemistry in Giant Planets , Brown Dwarfs , and Low - Mass Dwarf Stars II . Sulfur

We use thermochemical equilibrium and kinetic calculations to model sulfur and phosphorus chemistry in the atmospheres of giant planets, brown dwarfs, low-mass stars, and extrasolar giant planets (EGPs). The chemical behavior of individual Sand P-bearing gases and condensates is determined as a function of pressure, temperature, and metallicity. Our results are independent of any particular mod...

Hundreds of brown dwarfs (BDs) have been discovered in the last few years in stellar clusters and among field stars. BDs are almost as numerous as hydrogen burning stars and so any theory of star formation should also explain their origin. The “mystery” of the origin of BDs is that their mass is more than 10 times smaller than the average Jeans’ mass in star–forming clouds, and yet they are so ...

Disequilibrium Chemistry in a Brown Dwarf’s Atmosphere: Carbon Monoxide in Gliese 229b

The distribution of CO in Gliese 229B’s atmosphere reveals how disequilibrium processes establish the atmospheric composition. The CO abundance derived from its spectral signature exceeds the equilibrium value by several orders of magnitude. Our investigation of the source for CO considers disequilibrium mechanisms common to planetary atmospheres and concludes that the CO abundance is sensitive...

Modeling Brown Dwarfs , L Dwarfs , and T Dwarfs

In this contribution, I touch on a subset of our recent efforts in spectral and opacity modeling aimed at improving our understanding of brown dwarfs, L dwarfs, and T dwarfs. I discuss theoretical calculations of the alkali line profiles, newly generated CrH opacities, new evidence for refractory rainout in T dwarfs from optical spectral measurements, and the distinction between brown dwarfs an...

Lensing Budget in the Dominate Brown Dwarfs of Halo: A Possible Solution for the Microlensing Problems

For searching gravitational microlensing events, millions of stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) have been monitored for one decade and only a dozen of events have been detected. The low number of events causes ambiguities in studying the mean mass of MACHOs and their contribution to the Milky Way halo mass due to Poisson fluctuation. The results obtained by the microlensing experiments, ...
